Badly hit European countries hope to see COVID-19 turnaround due to lockdown measures

Lockdown measures in Spain have been tightened as the death toll hits a new record. 

All non-essential workers will be confined to their homes until April 9th, on top of further restrictions imposed on March 14th. 

Italy has seen the third fall in its death toll, but passed the 10,000 death milestone over the weekend.

EASYJET GROUNDS ENTIRE FLEET

Budget airline Easyjet says it is grounding its entire fleet of aircraft due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It comes as calls from the airline industry for a government bailout increase because of the disruption caused by coronavirus.

Meanwhile, thousands of staff from the sector in the UK are being offered roles at the new temporary NHS Nightingale Hospital in London.

Many airline employees are trained in first aid and have security clearance.

One of those who will volunteer is Easyjet cabin crew Ashley Brown.

Moscow placed under lockdown

Moscow residents are under lockdown from today and will only be permitted to leave their homes for a small number of exceptions. The measures were introduced as the number of COVID-19 cases exceeded 1,000 in the capital, with more than 1,500 recorded nationwide. Julia Chapman has more.

S. Korea mandates all travelers enter quarantine upon arrival

South Korea is reporting a slide in new coronavirus infections. But of the new cases, roughly 100 a day, many are travelers entering the country. The government will now force all new arrivals into self-isolation upon arrival.

Extending social guidelines, Trump concedes: up to 200,000 Americans may die of coronavirus

President Trump says as many as 200 thousand people are now expected to die of coronavirus in the United States.


He's extending the country's social distancing guidelines until the end of April, and acknowledging there is no way to re-open the US economy until at least June 1st.

Trump demands states are "appreciative" if they want federal coronavirus aid

Italy records highest toll on record for the second time

Italy has reported 919 deaths from the coronavirus in a single day - the highest death toll on record anywhere in the world. 

It has now surpassed China with the number of confirmed cases, at nearly 86,500.
