UK and EU set for Brexit negotiations on Boris Johson's new deal

European Union leaders say that problems remain with Boris Johnson's Brexit proposals, but they have been careful not to dismiss them out of hand. The Prime Minister is presenting his plans to replace the Northern Irish backstop, which is an insurance policy to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The EU is keen to avoid a "blame game" during the negotiations, as Olly Barratt reports from London.

EU considers Boris Johnson's Brexit proposals

Boris Johnson is setting out his proposals for a Brexit deal, while EU leaders consider their response.

The Prime Minister's plan includes ditching the controversial Irish border backstop. Instead, Northern Ireland would stay in the European single market for goods, but leave the customs union, resulting in new customs checks. Mr Johnson still insists that the UK will leave the EU on 31st October, with or without a deal.

The European Commission welcomes these "advances" and says it will look at this offer "objectively," as Olly Barratt reports from London.
