Boris Johnson publishes Brexit plans, replacing Irish backstop

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has written a letter to the European Commission President, Jean-Claude Junker, laying out his Brexit proposals which include replacing the controversial Irish border backstop -- an insurance policy to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit.

The UK is due to leave the EU on 31st October, with Prime Minister Johnson promising to leave with or without a deal by that deadline.

The Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, however, says that Boris Johnson's Brexit proposals are "not promising" and "do not appear to form the basis of an agreement."
