Lawmakers split over Trump's offer to end shutdown


The partial US government shutdown, now in day 31, is showing little sign of ending with senior democrats rejecting a new funding deal from President Trump

His proposal is expected to be taken up by senate republicans later this week, just as House democrats line-up a vote on their own legislation

UK Prime Minister Theresa May's unveiled her Plan B Brexit strategy.

She says she will broadly stick to the deal agreed with Brussels - but overwhelmingly rejected by UK lawmakers last week.

Mrs May insists she'll try and secure changes to the controversial Irish border backstop that would also win approval from the UK's House of Commons.

But opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn says she's in 'denial' that her plan is still workable.

IMF issues global growth warning

The International Monetary Fund has warned that trade tensions could
impact the global economy.

In October they predicted the global economy to grow 3.7% in 2019. But
the IMF now expect growth of 3.5%.

Another undisclosed missile site found in North Korea

Researchers have discovered a secret ballistic missile base in North Korea, one of as many as twenty operating in the rogue nation.

The report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank comes as US President Donald Trump prepares for a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

AU postpones DRC visit

A visit by a high level delegation from the African Union to Kinsasha  scheduled for 21stJanuary has been postponed.


This follows a decision by the Democratic Republic of Congo to allow its constitutional court to declare the final results of the presidential elections held at the end of last year, contrary to African Union's request.

EU governments divided over Brexit extension period

The European Union's governments are split over how long any extension to the Brexit negotiation period should be if the UK ask for one.

MAY TO SET OUT BREXIT 'PLAN B'

UK Prime Minister Theresa May is due to set out her 'Plan B' for Brexit.

She'll address lawmakers later (1530G approx) on next steps, after the Brexit deal she'd agreed with Brussels was rejected by the House of Commons last week.

However, it's understood she hopes to win changes to the controversial Irish border backstop solution - rather than tack towards a softer Brexit.

Britain's due to leave the EU on March 29th, but is currently set to do so without a deal in place.

Conservative MP Bob Stewart says Mrs May is right to focus on winning support by amending the backstop.

India's richest 1 per cent see 39 per cent increase in wealth, study reveals

The wealthiest 1 per cent of India's population became richer by 39 per cent last year compared to a 3 per cent increase in the wealth of the bottom half of the country, according to a study by Oxfam.

This rise in inequality is undermining the fight against poverty, according to the global organisation.

Man mauled to death by lions in Indian zoo

A man was killed by two lions in one of India's largest zoos and police say they are now probing how he managed to enter the lion enclosure. 

In 2014, in another similar incident, a youth was mauled to death by a tiger in a Delhi zoo.

This year's blood moon is the last of its kind for two years.

Mueller: Buzzfeed report on Trump is "not accurate"

US Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller says a website report alleging that President Trump instructed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress is "not accurate".


In a highly unusual statement, the Special Prosecutor's office intervened after several members of Congress said the Buzzfeed report meant impeachment proceedings should begin against the President.
