Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke over the phone about several issues related to their alliance.
Most pressing -- next month's anticipated summit between President Donald Trump and leader Kim Jong-un.
Seoul says it's been coordinating its views with Washington ahead of the talks.
Kang and Pompeo also discussed sharing the cost of keeping U.S. troops in South Korea.
President Trump wants Seoul to pay more, and because of that, the two sides have been unable to reach a deal.
