EU OFFICIALS MEET TO FINALISE BREXIT DEAL

EU officials are meeting in Brussels to try and finalise a Brexit deal ahead of a leaders' summit on Sunday.

Spain has threatened to veto the deal over concerns about Gibraltar - although it doesn't have the power to actually do so.

But Brussels hopes for unanimous approval for the withdrawal agreement and political declaration on future relations with the UK, that have been agreed with London.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May says a deal is 'within our grasp'.

Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo says he believes Spain will be able to sign up to the agreement.

May says a good Brexit deal is within grasp

British Prime Minister Theresa May has told the country that a good Brexit deal is within grasp and she is determined to deliver on it.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is facing criticism from MPs over her draft political declaration with the EU, which sets out plans for the UK's future relationship with the European Union bloc after Brexit.

The document has been agreed on by the UK and Brussels and will need to be signed off by the other 27 EU members, alongside the withdrawal agreement draft which was agreed upon last week.

The draft on the future relationship is a roadmap for negotiations which will take place after Brexit, during a 21 month transition period. But many who oppose this draft agreement argue that they believe it will mean the transition period will last beyond 21 months and the UK will remain tied to the EU for an indefinite amount of time.

UK and Brussels Agree Draft Future Relationship Text

The British Prime Minister has agreed a draft deal on the UK's future relationship with the European Union with Brussels.

She argues it is the right deal for the whole of the UK and would deliver a Brexit the UK had voted for. It comes after a draft withdrawal agreement on exiting the EU was agreed last week.

The draft deal, which provides a roadmap for the future relationship runs to 26 pages, but is not legally binding.

However many politicians have criticised it, saying it sets out vague aspirations and does not go far enough in ensuring UK demands

With many concerned that the backstop will be never-ending, the UK Prime Minster says this draft agreement sets out alternative plans to a backstop, to help calm those concerns.
