UN concerned about deal to repatriate Rohingya refugees

The United Nations has expressed concern about an agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar to return Rohingya refugees to Myanmar's Rakhine state in November, despite UN warnings of continuing genocide there.


More than 720 thousand mostly Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh in the past year, but the UN says their repatriation must be voluntary and cannot be rushed.

Protests Against Trump Visit to Pittsburgh

Local and national officials declined to appear with President Trump as he visited a grieving Pittsburgh. 

Trump arrived in Pittsburgh shortly after the first funerals of the victims of last weekend's shooting inside a Pittsburgh synagogue began.

Notorious Boston Gangster and Informant Dead at 89

One of America's most storied underworld figures has died in prison in West Virginia. 
James Bulger — known as Whitey was the head of a violent South Boston crime ring known as the Winter Hill Gang from the 1970s into the 1990s and he was an FBI informant.

Apple reveals new Mac & iPad products

US navy chief says US and China will meet "more on the high seas"

Chief of U.S. Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson has said the United States and China "will meet each other more and more on the high seas".

S. Korean court orders Japanese firm to compensate forced labor

A South Korean court has ordered a major Japanese steelmaker to pay four Koreans for forced labor during Japan's occupation of the Korean Peninsula. The ruling could impact similar lawsuits pending in South Korea and further damage Seoul and Tokyo's troubled relations.

South Korea's Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that orders Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation to pay the plaintiffs nearly 90-thousand dollars each.


Just one of the four men who brought the suit seeking compensation and unpaid wages is still alive.


The men said they were forced to work at Japanese steel mills in the early 1940s.


Japan and South Korea have troubled ties over their past.


Many Koreans believe Japan still owes an official apology and compensation for actions during the colonial period.


Tokyo says the issue of forced labor was settled by a 1965 treaty to restore diplomatic ties.

SEARCH FOR LION AIR PLANE CONTINUES

Authorities in Indonesia are using drone and sonar technology to try and find the Lion Air passenger plane which crashed on Monday.

Debris and personal belongings from flight JT 610 have been found, but there's been no sign of any survivors.

189 passengers and crew were on board when the internal flight came down shortly after taking off from Jakarta.

It's not yet known why the plane crashed.
