EU 'READY TO TWEAK BREXIT NEGOTIATING MANDATE'

The EU is considering updating the instructions to its chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, according to the Financial Times.

It's reported Mr Barnier's mandate could be given additional guidance to boost the chances of reaching a deal with the UK on its exit from the bloc.

However, EU member states continue to have reservations about UK Prime Minister Theresa May's so-called 'Chequers Plan'.

And she continues to face opposition on the proposals from Brexiteers in her own Conservative Party who believe it doesn't represent a clean break with the EU.

Former cabinet minister David Mellor believes neither Mrs May nor the Brexiteers have convinced the British people.

This is U.S. special representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun's first trip to Seoul in his new State Department role.

He's meeting officials here to discuss the process to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said he's committed to giving them up.

Little progress appears to have been made on that commitment. But there's hope in Seoul that next week's third summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Kim could jump start talks.

On Monday, the White House said it received a "warm" letter from Kim requesting a second summit with President Donald Trump. His office said it's now coordinating that meeting.
