UK firm Cambridge Analytica is accused of taking information from millions of Facebook users without authorisation to influence the US election of 2016.
Cambridge Analytica has suspended its chief executive after he was filmed claiming to have run parts of Donald Trump's campaign, and outlining other ways of affecting elections and discrediting politicians.
Facebook is being investigated by the US Federal Trade Commission.
