FACEBOOK UNDER PRESSURE OVER 'DATA BREACH'

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is under growing pressure to explain claims user data from his social network was misused.

UK firm Cambridge Analytica is accused of taking information from millions of Facebook users without authorisation to influence the US election of 2016.

Cambridge Analytica has suspended its chief executive after he was filmed claiming to have run parts of Donald Trump's campaign, and outlining other ways of affecting elections and discrediting politicians.

Facebook is being investigated by the US Federal Trade Commission.

India to jail doctors for not reporting tuberculosis cases

The Indian government has made the non-reporting of tuberculosis a penal offence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has proposed a jail term for those medical practitioners who fail to report tuberculosis cases.

Police: Explosion in Austin not connected to package bombings

Police say they do not believe an explosion at a charity store in Austin is linked to a series of bombings in and around the city.

A store employee was injured after handing what authorities describe as "artillery simulators" that were found in a box of military mementos.

It's reported the device was a flare that was among several items donated to the Goodwill store.

The US government is launching an investigation of Facebook after the political campaign firm Cambridge Analytica was able to secure access to the personal data of more than 50 million users.


Meanwhile, Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg failed to appear at a meeting of company employees.

Chemical weapons body probes UK Russian spy attack

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has deployed to the UK to investigate the nerve agent attack against a former Russian spy. 

The attack two weeks ago has sparked a diplomatic spat between the London and Moscow, with diplomats from both countries expelled. 

The head of the international chemical weapons watchdog visited New York to brief the United Nations Security Council on the investigation.

Minneapolis police officer charged over Australian woman's death

A Minneapolis police officer has turned himself in for gunning down Australian life coach Justine Ruszczyk Damond, in July last year.


She was shot dead moments after calling 911 to report what she believed was a sexual assault in an alley behind her house.


Ms Damond's death caused international outrage and prompted significant changes to the police department's policy on body cameras.


Now, police officer Mohamed Noor faces charges of third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
