Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has declared victory in the Spanish
region's bid for statehood.
Turnout for the contentious vote has been registered at 42.3% but
officials have announced that 90% of people backed the region's
independence bid.
The referendum has been deemed illegal by Spain's constitutional court
and hundreds of people were injured at polling stations as police
tried to halt voting.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called the vote a mockery and that
Catalans had been tricked into taking taking part in an illegal vote.
