US Lawmakers call for independent prosecutor after Comey firing

American lawmakers are deeply skeptical about the official reasons why U.S. President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Letters from the White House say James Comey handled the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server improperly.

But Democratic Minority leader Senator Chuck Schumer is one of many not buying that argument.

Trump fires FBI Director

US President Donald Trump has sacked the Director of the FBI.


James Comey was removed from his post after misleading Congress over the number of Hillary Clinton's e-mails that were sent to an unsecured computer during her time as Secretary of State.

Emergency declared at nuclear site in Washington state

An emergency has been declared at a nuclear site in Washington state in the US, after the partial collapse of a tunnel containing highly-toxic nuclear waste.

White House defends waiting 18 days to fire Flynn after warning he was vulnerable to Russian blackmail

The White House has defended its actions after then-acting Attorney General Sally Yates warned that then-national Security Adviser, Michael Flynn was vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians.

Yates told White House officials that Flynn put himself in a compromising position by offering misleading accounts of conversations he had with the Russian ambassador.  

In his daily press briefing presidential spokesman Sean Spicer called Yates a "political opponent" of the President and told reporters that it was time to move on from the Flynn story.

But he was pressed about why it took 18 days for President Trump to fire Flynn after Yates' warning.

Corbyn warns of a "day of reckoning" under Labour

Britain's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has officially launched the party's general election campaign, saying he wants to see a "jobs first" Brexit that delivers real social change for the people of the country.
