Helen Clark Comes Seventh in Fifth UN Straw Poll

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has come seventh in the latest UN straw poll to determine a new Secretary General.

Ms. Clark won six votes in her favour, but nine discouraging her candidacy - two more than last time.

German chemical company to buy American firm

The German chemical company Lanxess announced plans to buy the US firm Chemtura for two point seven billion dollars. 

Shares in Lanxness rose over eight percent on the news as it tries to diversify its offerings.

Antonio Guterres Tops Fifth UN Straw Poll For Secretary General Post

The United Nations Security Council has held another informal straw poll to determine who will take over from Ban Ki Moon as Secretary General at the end of this year.

US Prepares For High-Stakes Presidential Debate

Long Island's Hofstra University will become the centre of the US election campaign on Monday night, as it plays host to the first head to head debating contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Kremlin: US Syria Rhetoric 'Unacceptable'

Russia has said it's concerned that terrorist groups are using a ceasefire in Syria to regroup, and accused the US and Britain of using 'unacceptable' language during an emergency UN meeting about the situation.

It came after both nations said Russian and Syrian forces were 'laying waste' to the rebel-held city of Aleppo.

New poll shows Clinton/Trump tied ahead of first TV debate

A new opinion poll shows Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are tied in the race for the US Presidency, just hours before the two candidates square off in the first TV debate of the election campaign.


The Bloomberg poll gives them each 46 per cent of the vote.

Swiss voters vote in favour of greater surveillance

Voters in Switzerland have given their intelligence services greater powers for increased surveillance in a referendum on the issue.

Golf legend Arnold Palmer has died at the age of 87.

He died at a hospital in Pittsburgh where he'd been having heart tests.
