CAS uphold IAAF ban on Russian track athletes

A Swiss court for sports ruled Russian track and field athletes will not be going to compete at 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The decision comes in the wake of revelations of widespread government-sponsored doping regime in Russian sports. Theresa May in Paris for Brexit talks

The new British Prime Minister Theresa May is set to visit President François Hollande in Paris later on Thursday - after her first official trip abroad to Berlin on Wednesday.
May said she had "a very constructive discussion" with Angela Merkel, but France is widely believed to be less willing to do a post-Brexit deal that suits Britain.

MAY VISITS HOLLANDE IN PARIS

New UK Prime Minister Theresa May is visiting French President Francois Hollande in Paris for talks on the EU, as well as the economy and security issues.

It follows talks in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at which Theresa May was told there would be no official negotiations on Brexit until the UK presses Article 50 to begin the leaving process.

Mrs May has signalled Britain won't hit Article 50 this year.

Stefan de Vries is in Paris, and says the relationship between May and Hollande is likely to be different to the May-Merkel dynamic.

Pence Accepts VP Nom at Republican Convention

Turkey declares a state of emergency


Turkish President Recep Erdogan has declared a state of emergency, effective for three months, following last week's attempted coup.

He promised that Turkish citizens should not have "the slightest concern with regards to democracy, rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms".

Turkey is also central to the fight against the Islamic State, with coalition forces running missions out of the air base at Incirlik.

Goal of $2 billion in pledges for Iraq

The Obama administration believes it has secured more than $2 billion in new money to support Iraq, including $450 million for humanitarian relief.

Prominent journalist killed in car bomb in Kiev

US freezes Malaysian development bank assets

The U.S. is hoping to force the forefeiture of more than $ 1 billion in assets, originally associated with 1MDB, the Malaysian development bank.

The Wall Street Journal reports, some $13 billion was raised for the sovereign wealth fund, but about $6 billion has gone missing.

May's comments after Merkel meeting

The UK's new prime minister Theresa May began the process of meeting with European leaders by visiting German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. 

While formal negotiations over Brexit won't begin until the UK triggers article 50 to officially start the process of leaving the EU, everyone is closely watching the early signs from both countries.

Despite what could be a long and difficult process, May stressed her support for her European partners.
