Aleppo truce extended for 3 days

Russia announced the temporary lull in Aleppo was extended for 3 more days. The halt in violence brought a much needed rest to the residents of Aleppo and Latakia region which witnessed fierce fighting in the past several weeks between the rebels and the government troops. Sadiq Khan praises Londoners for choosing unity over division

London has welcomed it's new Mayor. The Labour Party's Sadiq Khan becomes the first Muslim to hold the post after a bitter campaign during which his main rival, Conservative Zac Goldsmit claimed Mr Khan had links to extremists.

In the end voters chose the son of a Pakistan-born bus driver over the privately-educated heir to a fortune.

During the campaign, Mr Khan admitted before becoming an MP he did share platforms with people whose views he had sometimes opposed, through his work as a human rights lawyer, but that he was a well known anti-extremist.

In his victory speech, he pledged to represent everyone in the capital.

Suspect caught in Washington gun attacks

A manhunt in Washington is over after police caught a police officer who is wanted in connection with the killing of his wife on Thursday, and two other shooting deaths at local shopping centers on Friday.

One person has been killed and three others injured in two separate shooting incidents on the outskirts of Washington DC.

A police manhunt is underway after the attacks at two separate shopping centers.

It's reported that the suspect is himself a police officer who is believed to have killed his wife in a shooting at a local school on Thursday.

Sexual assault charges dropped in Cologne trial

Prosecutors dropped sexual assault charges against an Algerian man in the first trial of its kind after a series of attacks in the German city of Cologne on New Year's Eve.

LABOUR LOSES GROUND IN KEY ELECTIONS

In the UK, the opposition Labour Party has performed badly in key elections, although avoiding the meltdown some had predicted.

Labour appears to have been pushed into third place in elections for the Scottish Parliament.

And it has lost councillors on a series of local authorities, although it has held onto control of several key councils in England.

Results in London's Mayoral election won't be confirmed until later.
