SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE CHIEF SUSPENDED

A UK police chief has been suspended following inquests into the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 that left 96 Liverpool football supporters dead.

South Yorkshire Police chief constable David Crompton's suspension comes over what the force's Police and Crime Commissioner calls an 'erosion of trust'.

After 27 years, the jury at new inquests into the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans decided they were 'unlawfully killed' in a stadium crush at an FA Cup semi-final.

The jury also blamed police and emergency service failures for what happened.

UK correspondent Olly Barratt says the suspension will be welcome news to many victims' families.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to the families of the Hillsborough disaster victims for what he called a long search for justice.   Mr Cameron praised the resilience of the relatives of those that died in the 1989 disaster.

On Tuesday an inquest found that the 96 victims attending the FA Cup semi-final  at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield were unlawfully killed, due to the failures of the police and emergency responders.    It also found that some police officers covered up their actions and discredited the Liverpool football supporters.

Commemoration services are taking  place in Liverpool to remember those who died in Britain's worst sporting disaster while two criminal investigations are  underway.

FOCUS TURNS TO CRIMINAL CHARGES OVER HILLSBOROUGH

Two separate criminal investigations into the Hillsborough stadium disaster of 1989 are now the focus after a jury decided 96 Liverpool fans who died that day were unlawfully killed.

Inquest decisions also pointed the blame at the police for the fatal crush at an FA Cup semi-final, and the two-year legal proceedings also heard evidence of a police cover-up.

Events are taking place in Liverpool to commemorate the 96 supporters who lost their lives.

But victims' families now want criminal charges to follow.
