US plans $4 billion for self-driving cars

The U.S. Department of Transportation is allotting four billion dollars for the development of self-driving cars.

The Obama administration announced the news at the Detroit Auto Show.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami are tracking a rare January hurricane in the Atlantic which they say is likely to hit the Azores Islands on Friday.
A warning has been issued for the Islands as Hurricane Alex heads in that direction with wind speeds of 140km/h (85 mph).
Residents have been told to expect waves up to 18m (60ft) high and wind gusts up to 160km/h.

Kerry condemns Jakarta attack (clip) - US Embassy closed

The US Embassy in Jakarta will remain closed on Friday following a series of explosions and gun attacks in the heart of the Indonesian capital on Thursday.

At least two civilians and five attackers died.

Russia says it supports results of the WADA investigation

US releases more prisoners from Guantanamo Bay

The United States has released ten more prisoners from the controversial Guantanamo Bay jail in Cuba.

That brings the number of detainees at the facility to below a hundred.

More armed police to patrol London

More armed police officers are to be trained to patrol the British capital following the multiple attacks in Paris last year by  Islamic State gunmen.

The head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said he had taken the decision as the UK is likely to face what he called a spontaneous attack that would require a fast response.

At least seven confirmed dead after Jakarta attacks

At least seven people have been killed after a series of bomb blasts and gun battles in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. 

Police say the situation is now under control, with five suspected attackers believed to be among the dead. 

Indonesia's President Joko Widodo described the attack as an "act of terror" and said the country was grieving for the victims. 

At least one of the blasts hit a Starbucks cafe outside a shopping centre and close to a police security post.

Several attackers are reported to have entered the cafe and detonated explosives before being tackled by armed police. 

Journalist Aulia Masna who is based in the city said the explosions occurred at a busy time.
