Obama makes his final State of the Union address

US President Barack Obama has defended his legacy while striking an optimistic tone for the future in his final State of the Union address.

Speaking before the US congress he pushed back against the negative tone of the current presidential race, arguing the US has the "strongest economy in the world".

He highlighted his achievements such health reform and reopening diplomatic relations with Cuba in a bid to cement his legacy.

He took aim at Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump who has been criticised for his comments about Muslims and immigrants.

House passes North Korea sanctions resolution

The U.S. House of Representatives has overwhelmingly voted to approve additional sanctions against North Korea.

The move comes just days after North Korea reportedly tested a hydrogen bomb.

Oil Dips Below $30

The major US stock indexes finished strong Tuesday, as US and European
stock investors looked past another steep drop in oil prices to buy.

US regulators reject VW diesel car fix

US regulators have rejected Volkswagen's proposed fix for most of the vehicles involved in its emissions scandal.

The California Air Resources Board has also rejected it, going one step further, issuing a notice of 13 violations.

Putin does not rule out asylum for Assad

UN says urgent medical evacuation needed for 400 patients in Madaya

About 400 hospital patients in besieged Madaya, Syria need to be
evacuated for urgent medical treatment.

Venezuela's Supreme Court halts National Assembly

Venezuela's Supreme Court has ruled that all actions taken by the opposition-led National Assembly are null and void until it removes three legislators who the court had suspended after the December Parliamentary elections.

Most Istanbul blast victims said to be German
