EUROPE ON TERROR ALERT

European capitals are on high alert ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations, after Brussels cancelled its fire works display.

Belgian officials made the decision based on intelligence, and following arrests of two men suspected of plotting terror attacks in Brussels for New Year's Eve.

Ukraine and Russia in debt standoff

LEAD:

A deadline for Ukraine to re-pay its $3billion eurobond debt to Russia expires on 31st December.  Kiev was meant to pay back the loan on 20th December and had a 10 day grace period. Earlier in December Kiev has put a moratorium on the debt, which mean it is likely to default on it. Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

EXTRA ARMED POLICE DRAFTED IN FOR LONDON NYE

In London, extra armed police have been drafted in for New Year's Eve celebrations amid warnings terrorists could be planning attacks in Europe.

London's official fireworks display on the banks of the River Thames is completely sold out.

3000 police officers will be on duty in the British capital.

But superintendent Jo Edwards says it's a precautionary measure.

CONTROVERSY OVER UK HONOURS LIST

In the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron is under fire for the award of a knighthood to an Australian adviser who helped the Conservative Party win May's general election.

Opposition Labour say Lynton Crosby's recognition in the Queen's New Year's honours list is 'outrageous' and undermines the integrity of the system.

Elsewhere, actor Idris Elba has been awarded an OBE, as has two-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome.

Russian government outlines details of extended Turkey sanctions

Russian government unveiled a detailed list of activities that Turkish-owned companies will be forced to cease to perform as of January 1, 2016. U.S. reportedly preparing fresh sanctions against Iran

The U.S. is preparing new sanctions against nearly a dozen companies in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates, for their alleged links to Iran's missile program- that's according to the Wall Street Journal.

The sanctions targeting companies and individuals for their alleged role, would be represent the first action since Tehran came to a nuclear deal with the international community in July.

Bill Cosby charged with sexual assault

NY officials ramp up security for New Year's Eve Times Square celebrations

Manhattan's New Year's Eve celebrations at Times Square will be the safest place in the world, say New York City officials. 

The assurance comes as authorities amp up security measures around the city's biggest event, expected to draw a million revelers to ring in the new year.

Bill Cosby facing criminal charges

Prosecutors in the US state of Pennsylvania have filed criminal charges against comedian Bill Cosby for the alleged drugging and sexual assault of a woman in 2004.

Originally, prosecutors did not have enough evidence to press forward with the case- but that's now changed after dozens of women have come forward saying they were raped and abused by Cosby.

Bill Cosby is expected to be arraigned in court later today in Pennsylvania.

Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele says the charges stem from a sexual assault that took place at Cosby's home.

Couple jailed for life for London terror plot

A British couple have been jailed for life after being found guilty of plotting a terrorist attack in central London...

Gunmen shoot tourists at fortress in south Russia
