53 homes lost as Australian bushfires raze the Victorian surf coast

In Australia Christmas Day turned nasty for residents of Victoria's west coast as bushfires bore down on four towns in the holiday area.

Americans held hostage by Iran eligible for reparations

The Americans and their families who were taken hostage during the Iranian Revolution in 1979 are now eligible for cash reparations.

The former hostages and their survivors could receive as much as $4.4 million each, reports the New York Times.

Obama administration reportedly gearing up for deportations

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is preparing to deport hundreds of families who entered the country illegally from Central America, where they were fleeing war and violence.

That's according to the Washington Post, which says the Obama administration is targeting families already earmarked for removal.

The nationwide campaign could reportedly begin as early as January.

This December 24th is officially the hottest in New York City's recorded history.

With cloudy skies and an expected high of 74 Fahrenheit [23 celcius], it's putting the previous record of 63 Fahrenheit [17 celcius] in 1996 to shame.

156 PIECES OF IVORY SEIZED IN TANZANIA

Tanzanian authorities have seized tusks from 45 elephants and arrested two suspects in the country's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

US airstrikes target Afghan province

The United States has carried out two air strikes in the Afghan
district of Sangin in support of the government's fight against the
Taliban.

The district was overrun this week but Afghan officials say they've
killed 50 fighters and a local Taliban commander.

SHARM EL SHEIKH FLIGHT SUSPENSION EXTENDED

British tour operator Thomas Cook has extended its cancellation of flights to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt until March 23rd.

It follows the crash of a Russian passenger jet from the resort in November, in a suspected bombing which killed 224 people.

UK and US issue threat warnings to their citizens in Beijing

The British and US Government have issued warnings of possible threats to their citizens living in the Chinese capital Beijing around the Christmas period. 

The threats against westerners is thought to apply to the popular bar and shopping neighbourhood of Sanlitun which has seen occasional anti-foreigner violence in the past.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

NORTHERN ENGLAND BRACES FOR FURTHER FLOODING

The north of England is braced for fresh severe flooding over the Christmas period.

Storm Eva is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to some areas of Cumbria which have been flooded three times in a month.

Several rivers have burst their banks again, and the army is being used to provide support ahead of further rainfall.

BURMESE PAIR SENTENCED TO DEATH OVER UK BACKPACKERS' MURDERS

Two Burmese men have been sentenced to death for the murder of two British tourists in Thailand last year.

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were found guilty of the murders of 23 year-old Hannah Witheridge and 24 year-old David Miller.

Their bodies were found on a beach on Koh Tao island.

The backpackers were beaten to death by the two bar workers, both migrants from Myanmar.
