UK, France and Spain push for UN sanctions on Syria barrel bombs

INTRO: As the security and humanitarian situation in Syria worsens,
the United Nations is pushing for more action to stop the use of
barrel bombs in the conflict.

Three countries on the Security Council are preparing a draft
resolution that threatens sanctions against those who use these
weapons.

Russia: Vienna Talks Aim To Secure ‘United, Secular and Democratic Syria’

Talks aimed at resolving the civil war in Syria have opened in Vienna, involving all the foreign powers backing rival sides in the conflict - the US, Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The Russian foreign ministry says the main goal is to secure a united, secular and democratic Syria.

UN pushes for more action on climate change

The United Nations says proposals submitted by 146 nations to limit
climate change currently aren't enough to stop global temperatures
rising by more than two degrees Celsius.

But in a report released by the UN- they say the proposals are a
positive move and that their goal is still within reach.

LEAD: Armed police raided a library specializing in Ukrainian literature in Moscow on Thursday, arresting its stuff and confiscating books. Top Gear legal challenge reopened in Argentina

A criminal investigation into the BBC's Top Gear programme is being relaunched by a judge in Argentina.


During filming of the programme in Argentina, a number plate on a car being driven by former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, appeared to make reference tot he 1982 Falklands War.


The move sparked widespread protest in the country and filming had to be abandoned, as our UK Correspondent Natalie Powell reports…

Last British resident leaves Guantanamo Bay

The last British resident being held at Guantanamo Bay has left the base in Cuba and is returning the UK after 13 years...

Talks on Syria to unite countries backing rival forces

International talks on Syria underway in Vienna, the Austrian capital, for the first time include Iran, which, along with Russia, backs the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On the second day the participants will meet in an extended format to discuss a political transition and possible solutions to the four-year-long civil conflict in Syria. While talks are unlikely to likely to find an immediate solution, the US Secretary of State John Kerry called them "the most promising opportunity for a political opening we have seen." German rapper turned ISIS fighter killed in airstrikes

Tanzania Opposition Calls for Election Recount, Zanzibar Poll Nullified

Dr. John Magufuli was declared Tanzania's next President Thursday, but
he took victory with just 58% of the vote making this the tightest
contest in Tanzania's history. Dr. Magufuli belongs to the party that
has ruled the party since independence, the CCM, and he is promised to

Syrian political settlement is focus of Vienna talks - US

The Obama administration wants to focus on a possible political settlement for Syria during the talks in Vienna, which are including Iranian representatives for the first time.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry did not mince words when he described the challenge of the Vienna talks as finding a way out of hell.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said it's in Tehran's interest to find a political solution for the country they've been propping up.

US, China discuss encounters in South China Sea

The Chinese defence ministry is vowing "to take all necessary measures in accordance with the need," following an American warship sailing through international waters  and past islands claimed as sovereign by Beijing.

U.S. and Chinese naval officials held talks, and promised to stick to the protocols of the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea for militaries.

US confirms release of Guantanamo Bay detainee

The White House is confirming Ahmed Ould Abdel al-Aziz has been transferred to his home country of Mauritania after 13 years in detenion.

Mr. abdel al-Aziz was originally captured in Karachi Pakistan, but he was never charged with any crimes, and his release was actually approved in 2009, although not carried out until recently.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest would only confirm his release, not that any apology is in the offing.
