US Votes Against UN Cuba Resolution


The US has voted against a resolution at the United Nations condemning the American trade embargo on Cuba, the only member country to do so apart from Israel.

Washington usually does vote down the annual measure, but following Barack Obama and Raul Castro's recent moves towards normalising relations, it was thought it may abstain this year.

EU refugee crisis deepens

European Union leaders are warning member states the refugee crisis threatens the cohesion of the EU. 

More than 700,000 refugees have crossed EU borders this year according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees as European leaders continue to seek a united response.

US Defense Secretary Commits to More US Raids Against ISIS

The US Defense Secretary has laid out changes in the US strategy to counter the Islamic State organization, on battlefields in Iraq and Syria.

He's told a US Congressional committee says it will include intensified airstrikes and special forces raids.

EU ends mobile phone roaming charges

The European Parliament has voted through measures to end data roaming charges for mobile phone users within the European Union.

Mobile phone operators have opposed the plan over fears of major losses of revenue.

China brands US warship's passage "illegal"

A US warship which passed close to disputed Islands in the South China sea has been branded 'illegal' by Chinese officials.

The USS Lassen, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of the islands in the Spratly archipelago where China has been building several artificially created reefs.

Alibaba beat Wall St. estimates

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has posted it's earnings for the
second quarter with revenue beating Wall Street estimates.

It's welcome news for the company that has seen it's stock fall over
25% so far this year.

The European Union is warning the Greek government there is no time to lose in bringing in reforms demanded in the country's recent bailout.

Russia publishes fresh Syria airstrike video

Russia's Defense Ministry has published fresh video of air strikes in Syria purporting the missiles hitting the Islamic State infrastructure.

The US claims Russia mainly targets the opponents of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

US Plans to Warship Sailing Close to Chinese Artificial Islands

The US Navy is planning to send a destroyer ship to some artificial islands built by China.

The USS Lassen will sail within 12 nautical miles of a reclaimed area of the South China Sea, a direct challenge to China's territorial cliams. 

The islands have been built on in the archipelago known as the Spratleys.

US State Department Spokesman John Kirby wouldn't comment on the plan, but maintained the US position on freedom of navigation.

Russia carries out more strikes in Syria as Lavrov and Kerry discuss political settlement

The death toll is climbing after a powerful earthquake shook Afghanistan and Pakistan along with parts of India, with over 100 people now reported dead.

5 Britons confirmed dead after Canadian boat incident

Britain's foreign office has confirmed that five UK citizens were killed after a whale-watching boat sank off the west Canadian coast.


21 out of the 27 people on board were rescued, one person was still missing.

Concern about reported Russian activity near undersea cables

There's reportedly concern in Washington that Russian ships and submarines might be looking for ways to interfere with the undersea cables vital to the modern internet economy.
