MERKEL CALLS FOR EU LEADERS' SUMMIT ON REFUGEES

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling for an emergency EU leaders' refugee summit and for greater European unity in tackling the crisis.

This as hundreds of migrants became stranded at the Serbia-Hungary border after Hungary closed it with a new fence.

Robust retail sales data ahead of Fed meeting

Retail sales in the United States ticked up 0.2% last month aided by
strong auto sales.

And with consumer spending the major driver of the US economy- this
could influence the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates when they
meet later this week.

North Korea says main atomic reactor 'operational', threatens US

North Korea says its main nuclear reactor has been restarted and is once again operational.

The announcement from the Korean Central News Agency also said the secretive state would launch a nuclear attack against the US and it's allies if provoked.

Russia says it will continue sending military assistance to Syria

UK inflation rate falls back to 0%

Britain's inflation rate dropped to zero per cent in August according to official figures, possibly further postponing a rise in interest rates by the Bank of England. 

Cheaper clothing and fuel prices contributed to a fall in the Consumer Price Index.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Hungary to criminalise ilegal migrants

Hungary has introduced new laws to criminalise illegal migrants after closing a key entryway in to the EU from Serbia.

Other European countries including Germany and Austria say they've also been forced to introduce border controls in absence of a shared EU system for processing rising numbers of asylum seekers.

EU extends sanctions against Russia over Ukraine

Europe extended sanctions against Moscow over its position on the civil crisis in Ukraine. The restrictive measures target 149 people and 37 entities believed to be connected to Russia's annexation of Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula, in 2014. The sanctions are coordinated in close cooperation with Washington. Daria Bondarchuk reports from the Russian capital.

Donald Trump Holds Massive Rally in Dallas, TX

GOP front-runner Donald Trump addressed thousands of supporters at a rally in the US city of Dallas, Texas Monday, just two days before he will appear center stage for a second Republican presidential debate.

Trump brought his sometimes controversial campaign to the Republican-majority state to rally support, and speak on issues ranging from immigration to healthcare.

Again adding his voice to the ongoing debate over the Iran nuclear deal, Trump questioned the terms of the agreement and criticized Obama administration officials involved in the negotiating process.

California Fires Force Tens of Thousands to Evacuate

The governor of California has declared a state of emergency in two parts of the state as wildfires have forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes. 

One fire which roared to life over the weekend in the world famous Napa Valley has spread with speed that fire officials say is remarkable.

EU ministers fail to agree broader quota system for refugees

European Union interior ministers at a meeting in Brussels have been unable to agree on a quota system to distribute an additional 120 thousand asylum seekers across the bloc.

The EU is seeing thousands of refugees stream across its external border every month but there are deep divisions between its member countries about further action.

REPORTS: Russian tanks spotted at Syrian airbase, as 'buildup' continues

Russia has positioned at least half a dozen tanks near a strategic airfield in Syria, according to Reuters reports

US officials said the area where the T-90 battle tanks where seen is a stronghold for Syria's Bashar Al Assad regime, long supported by it's Russian ally.

Manhunt underway in Mississippi after university shooting

A manhunt is underway in Mississippi after a history professor was shot to death on a university campus.


A second body has reportedly been found at a house near the university, and police say they're trying to trace a second professor in connection with the attacks.

First-ever interview airs with New York prison worker who helped convicted murders in prison break

The first-ever interview has aired with Joyce Mitchell, the prison
seamstress who pleaded guilty to helping two convicted murderers
escape from a high-security prison in upstate New York.

Mitchell expressed remorse for the role she played in sparking a
22-day manhunt in June - now the longest prison break in New York's
history,

The search ended in Richard Matt being shot and killed by law
enforcement while David Sweat was captured two days later and placed
in solitary confinement.

In the interview, Mitchell said she was afraid her family would be
endangered if she didn't comply with the inmates.

Egyptian forces kill Mexican tourists


A dozen tourists are dead, and ten in hospital, after Egyptian security forces mistook them for militants. 

Mexicans and Egyptians are among the victims.

Egyptian officials say the holiday-makers were traveling in unmarked cars within a restricted zone in western Egypt when security forces opened fire on Saturday.
