California Fires Force Tens of Thousands to Evacuate

The governor of California has declared a state of emergency in two parts of the state as wildfires have forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes. 

One fire which roared to life over the weekend in the world famous Napa Valley has spread with speed that fire officials say is remarkable.

Bad polling news for Hillary Clinton

The American voters considered most likely to be natural Hillary Clinton voters are withdrawing their support.

That's according to the latest Washington Post / ABC News public opinion poll - which also notes, the email issue had emerged as the top issue for the Clinton campaign.

EU ministers fail to agree broader quota system for refugees

European Union interior ministers at a meeting in Brussels have been unable to agree on a quota system to distribute an additional 120 thousand asylum seekers across the bloc.

The EU is seeing thousands of refugees stream across its external border every month but there are deep divisions between its member countries about further action.

REPORTS: Russian tanks spotted at Syrian airbase, as 'buildup' continues

Russia has positioned at least half a dozen tanks near a strategic airfield in Syria, according to Reuters reports

US officials said the area where the T-90 battle tanks where seen is a stronghold for Syria's Bashar Al Assad regime, long supported by it's Russian ally.

Manhunt underway in Mississippi after university shooting

A manhunt is underway in Mississippi after a history professor was shot to death on a university campus.


A second body has reportedly been found at a house near the university, and police say they're trying to trace a second professor in connection with the attacks.

First-ever interview airs with New York prison worker who helped convicted murders in prison break

The first-ever interview has aired with Joyce Mitchell, the prison
seamstress who pleaded guilty to helping two convicted murderers
escape from a high-security prison in upstate New York.

Mitchell expressed remorse for the role she played in sparking a
22-day manhunt in June - now the longest prison break in New York's
history,

The search ended in Richard Matt being shot and killed by law
enforcement while David Sweat was captured two days later and placed
in solitary confinement.

In the interview, Mitchell said she was afraid her family would be
endangered if she didn't comply with the inmates.

Egyptian forces kill Mexican tourists


A dozen tourists are dead, and ten in hospital, after Egyptian security forces mistook them for militants. 

Mexicans and Egyptians are among the victims.

Egyptian officials say the holiday-makers were traveling in unmarked cars within a restricted zone in western Egypt when security forces opened fire on Saturday.

Kentucky clerk still refusing to authorize gay marriage licenses

The Kentucky county clerk who caused a storm in the US after refusing
to issue marriage licenses to gay couples has returned to work after
spending almost a week in jail.

Kim Davis says she will no longer interfere with the process, but she

EU SUMMIT ON MIGRANTS AFTER GERMANY IMPOSES BORDER CONTROLS

European Union interior ministers are holding an emergency summit in Brussels on the continent's refugee crisis.

They're debating an EU plan to share out an initial 40 000 asylum seekers across the bloc on a mandatory quota basis.

Several central and eastern European states have already vowed to oppose this.

And Germany has imposed controls at its border with Austria in response to the thousands of refugees arriving seeking refuge.

The new leader of the UK Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, is putting the finishing touches to his first shadow cabinet.

Left-wing, anti-austerity candidate Mr Corbyn faces significant opposition already, however, from within his own party.

He was elected on Saturday by party members but did not win resounding backing from Labour MPs at Westminster.

New state of emergency called as California battles wildfires

A second state of emergency has been called in the US state of
California as firefighters try to get another wildfire under control.

The latest fire in the Napa Valley region has now destroyed 40,000 acres.
