Major US corporations sign onto climate change pledge

Major American corporations including Apple, General Motors and Wal Mart, have signed onto the White House pledge to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

While some continue to contend that climate change does not exist, President Obama has said this is theissue that will define the rest of the 21st century.

Malaysia Upgraded in US Human Trafficking Report

Fiat Chrysler hit with record fine for safety defects

Car maker Fiat Chrysler has been hit with a record fine of more than a
hundred million dollars for mishandling vehicle safety recalls.

As our US correspondent Mimi Chiahemen reports, the fine is an
embarrassment to the company, but also follows the failure of other
car companies to deal adequately with safety problems.

UK Labour peer urged to step down from House of Lords


A British Labour party peer, is being urged to resign after footage surfaced of him allegedly taking drugs with prostituted.


Lord Sewel has quit his role as the Deputy Speaker of the Lords and has been suspended by his party however has indicated that he will not quite his role as peer.

U.S. State department human trafficking report has activists up in arms

The U.S. State Department is releasing [has released] its 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) after a four-week delay. [10 am EST- NB editors, please update lead]

The annual report scrutinizes some 188 countries' efforts to comply with minimum standards in the crackdown of human trafficking.

The report rates each country according to a Tier system- Tier 1 being most compliant, and Tier 3 being the worst.

As Nina-Maria Potts reports, one of the most controversial countries under scrutiny is Malaysia:

KOVTUN GIVEN TUESDAY DEADLINE TO START LITVINENKO EVIDENCE

A key suspect in the London inquiry into the murder of a former Russian spy has been given a Tuesday deadline to give evidence.

Dmitry Kovtun had been expected to start testifying via videolink from Russia on Monday, at the probe into the death of Alexander Litvinenko in the British capital in 2006.

But he says he hasn't been able to obtain permission from Russian officials to do so.

Mr Litvinenko was poisoned by radioactive substance Polonium 210 after having tea at a London hotel with Dmitry Kovtun and another Russian man, Alexander Lugovoi.

British authorities believe the two Russian agents murdered Mr Litvinenko, but both deny involvement.

Dan Whitehead is outside London's High Court and says Mr Kovtun's evidence could be pivotal to the inquiry.

Key evidence in the London inquiry into the murder of a Russian spy in 2006 won't be heard this week as planned after a Russian witness pulled out.

Dmitri Kovtun is thought to have been involved in the murder of Alexander Litvinenko in London, and was due to give evidence (starting on Monday) via videolink from Russia.

Greece's ex-Finance Minister Varoufakis planned parallel currency

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis is denying he wanted a return to the Greek drachma as reports emerge he planned a parallel payment system in case eurozone rescue talks failed.

Russian nationalist sentenced to life imprisonment

A Moscow court has sentenced a Russian nationalist leader to life imprisonment for his role in a series of hate crimes, including murders.


Thirty Three year old Ilya Goryachev (goriya-CHOV) had been found guilty of ordering five killings, setting up an ultra-nationalist group and illegally possessing weapons.

Australian asylum seekers believed to have been flown back to Vietnam

Turkey calls for NATO talks

NATO has called a meeting of its 28 ambassadors to evaluate the security situation in Turkey following recent attacks and address the country's role in fighting Islamic State.

Saudi Arabia's Yemen ceasefire in effect; UN chief calls on all sides to join humanitarian pause

Saudi Arabia's promise of a five-day ceasefire is now in effect, but questions remain about whether other parties to the conflict will follow suit.


United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday welcomed Saudi Arabia's surprise decision to suspend air strikes in Yemen.


He also urged all other groups in the conflict to join in the humanitarian pause for the sake of Yemen's civilians.

Congressional hearing following Clinton email developments

The Benghazi Select Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives is set to hold a hearing on U.S. State Department compliance with basic document requests. (Wednesday, July 29 in Washington)

The hearing comes after additional questions were raised about Hillary Clinton's emails from her time as U.S. Secretary of State and whether the committee has all those documents.

President Obama due to travel to Ethiopia

Hillary Clinton to testify about email

Presidential candidate and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has agreed to appear before a House panel on October 22 to testify about her use of email,  a statement from her campaign says.
