A top U.S. official is urging North Korea to give up its nuclear programme, calling it a fantasy.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State David Russel was briefing reporters before the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic dialogue.

Eurozone leaders to meet Monday on Greece after no deal in Luxembourg

Greece talks are going right down to the wire after a meeting of EU Finance ministers in Luxembourg failed to loosen the deadlock between Athens and its creditors.

Head of the Eurogroup, one of Greece's lenders, said the country needs to come up with a credible proposals in what will be its last opportunity.

If it fails to do so, default and a potential exit from the eurozone could be on the cards, as our Europe Correspondent Natalie Powell reports…

US lawmakers pass Trade Promotion Authority bill

U.S. lawmakers have voted to give President Obama the negotiating power to resurrect a controversial 12-nation Pacific trade deal.

The so-called Trade Promotion Authority got through the House of Representatives 218-208- despite most Democrats opposing the deal.

UN says record high 60 million people now displaced by global conflicts

The world is seeing the largest number of people displaced by conflict, says the United Nations.


Nearly sixty million people have fled war and violence, as old conflicts persist and new ones erupt.


The UN says its the largest humanitarian crisis ever, and calls for an unprecedented global response.

Obama: church shooting raises questions about America's 'dark history'

No other developed country has as much of a problem with gun violence as the United States.

That was the message from President Barack Obama,  reacting to the gunning down of nine African-Americans inside a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

The suspect is now in police custody, apprehended for what police are calling a 'hate crime'.

Obama adresses church shooting, points to gun control

US President Barack Obama says the American people need to "come to grips" with the fact that mass shootings like Wednesday's killing at a church in South Carolina do not happen in other countries - and he pointed to lax gun control as a cause.

Late Wednesday night, white 21 year old Dylann Roof allegedly opened fire in the traditionally African-American Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people.

He has since been taken into custody.

Roof reportedly gave a racist speech before he began shooting.

The President said the country needs to shift how it thinks about gun violence and that, despite political roadblocks, it is possible to take action to change the frequency of mass killings in the US.

Suspect in South Carolina church shootings caught

Police in North Carolina have caught the man they say was responsible for the mass shooting at a church that left 9 people dead.


Dylann Roof was captured several hours after the FBI launched a massive manhunt in response to the shootings.

Eurogroup Chair says Greece progress has been slow


With less than a fortnight before Greece's bailout deal expires, EU Finance ministers meeting in Luxembourg are holding talks to find a solution for the country.


Athens and its creditors have been in a stand-off over the terms of a debt deal, with neither side having been prepared to back down.


Officials are playing down this meeting as being a make-or-break moment for Greece and expectations that a deal can be reached are low.

Greece says it will present new proposals to creditors in Luxembourg

The Greek Finance Minster Yannis Varoufakis has arrived in Luxembourg for talks with his EU counterparts, in what has been seen as a last ditch attempt to secure a debt deal for Athens.


Four months of discussions have yet to break the stand-off between Greece and its creditors, with Athens saying it will not accept harsh austerity measures.


But Greece has less than two weeks to unlock bailout funds, or risks defaulting on an IMF repayment which could lead to a possible exit from the eurozone.


Finance Minister Yannis Varoufakis has previously said that Greece has a moral and political obligation to come up with a deal agreed by both sides, and reiterated that sentiment in Luxembourg saying he intends on bringing fresh proposals to the table.

ST PETERSBURG ECONOMIC FORUM LOOKS EAST

Thousands of business executives are in the Russian city of St Petersburg with the government hoping the annual economic forum there can be a show of strength in the face of western sanctions over Ukraine.

Leaders from the oil industry have turned out in large numbers with Russian oil and gas reserves now estimated to have jumped above 100 billion barrels for the first time.

But as well as positivity from the oil sector, Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes also to play up Moscow's attempts to boost trade ties with Asia and other emerging markets.

Massive manhunt underway after Charleston church shootings

An enormous manhunt is underway in South Carolina after 9 people were shot to death in a church that played a prominent role in America's civil rights struggle.


The shooting took place in the middle of a bible study class, and it's emerged that the gunman spent almost an hour in the church before opening fire.

CHARLESTON MANHUNT CONTINUES AFTER SHOOTING

Police have released images of the white suspect they believe shot nine people dead at an historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

The incident is being treated as a hate crime.

A manhunt is underway for a white male thought to be in his 20s.

Police say six females and three males were killed in the shooting which took place during a prayer meeting.

Charleston police chief Greg Mullen says his force is doing everything it can to apprehend the suspect.

3 British Muslim sisters feared to be enroute to Syria were prevented from travelling earlier this year


Three British muslim sisters who are believed to have travelled to Syria with their nine children were stopped from travelling abroad earlier this year. 

Khadija, Sugra and Zohra Dawood missed a flight to Saudi Arabia in March after being stopped by security officials.  The three sisters, who left their husbands at home, are thought to enroute to join their brother who travelled to Syria to join Islamic State last year.

20 injured in military collision

Two military personnel are in hospital with "life-threatening" injuries after a crash involving three troop carriers in the UK...
