EU FMs MEET AMID MIGRANT CRISIS

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg with migrant deaths in the Mediterranean atop the agenda.

The latest boat to capsize on its way from Libya is thought to have been carrying 700 migrants - with only a few dozen believed to have survived.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi says the European Union must do more, and insists the priority should be to stop so many boats leaving Libya.

Up to 1500 migrants are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean in 2015.

Greece Won't Budge, As Creditors Step Up Pressure for a Deal

Greece said it won’t budge on pledges to end austerity measures, despite pressure from creditors who continue to press for a compromise to avert an escalating crisis.

The Greek government hasn't yet come up with a list of reforms to satisfy the European Union it should receive the next tranche of bailout funds. And Athens has been forced to deny it is preparing to default as it runs out of cash to pay its bills.

But the government has to make a payment to the International Monetary Fund of around $1bn within weeks.

And economist Jeremy Cook of World First says the country is closer than ever to an exit from the eurozone.

President Obama rejects criticism from own party over new trade powers

American President Barack Obama has been defending new global trade deals against stinging criticism from within his own party.

Unions and many Democrats are furious about new trade deals planned by the President, including a major one with Pacific nations. They say negotiations are being done in secret with the Republicans and corporations that will damage the interests of American workers and the environment.

Speaking in Washington, the President said while he understood concerns about the outsourcing of jobs, the best way to defend the interests of American workers was to force other countries to open their markets to American goods.
