President Obama rejects criticism from own party over new trade powers

American President Barack Obama has been defending new global trade deals against stinging criticism from within his own party.

Unions and many Democrats are furious about new trade deals planned by the President, including a major one with Pacific nations. They say negotiations are being done in secret with the Republicans and corporations that will damage the interests of American workers and the environment.

Speaking in Washington, the President said while he understood concerns about the outsourcing of jobs, the best way to defend the interests of American workers was to force other countries to open their markets to American goods.
