Greenpeace Activists Board Arctic Oil Rig

The US government recently announced that international petroleum giant Shell could resume drilling for oil in the Arctic.

The company is expected to begin exploration again this summer but is encountering opposition from environmental activists, as Tim Exton reports from Seattle.

UN : Urgent Appeal for Safety of Civilians in Yarmouk

As the situation near the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk grows
more violent, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency has demanded
an end to all armed activity that endangers civilians.


Some 18,000 refugees live in Yarmouk, where the Islamic State launched
an offensive almost a week ago.

Closing arguments underway in Boston Bomber case

Closing arguments are underway in the case against alleged Boston Marathon Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is charged with killing three people and wounding more than 260 others in the worst terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11.

This is the last step before the jury begins deliberations to decide if the state proved Tsarnaev's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Timetable for Iran sanctions lift undecided

The Obama Administration says it has not yet agreed on a timetable to lift sanctions on Iran, as part of the P5+1 agreement on Tehran's nuclear program.

Last week, it was announced the parties had reached the framework to begin drafting a deal, wherein Iran would greatly reduce its nuclear program in exchange for a lifting of EU and US sanctions.

Iranian representatives have said they expect all sanctions to be lifted when the deal is signed.

But the Obama Administration says they want to phase out sanctions slowly, in order to keep pressure on Iran, and until they see proof Iran is following through on the terms of the deal.

The agreement is meant to be drafted by the end of June.

White House Spokesperson John Earnest said the timeline will be negotiated in coming months.

Edward Snowden grilled over whether he read all the documents he leaked

National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden has suggested for the first time that he may not have read all the secret documents he leaked.

The files exposed American citizens were being spied on.

Death toll in Yemen rises; US national killed in mortar attack

A Yemeni-American was killed in a rebel attack while visiting family in the war torn country last week.

Jamal al-Labani had been planning to bring his wife, who is pregnant, and their two-year old daughter back to the United States.

Kenya bombs Al Shabaab camps inside Somalia

Police arrest two teenagers in Northern England on suspicion of terrorist related offences


Police in Manchester have arrested a fourteen year old boy and a sixteen year old girl on suspicion of preparing for acts of terrorism.

Archbishop of Canterbury calls for christians to stand up to christian persecution around the world

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the leader of the world's Anglican communion, has used his Easter Sunday message to say the 148 Kenyan students who were killed at Garissa University last week are martyrs.   Justin Welby said christians must resist the persecution of other christian communities without violence. 

The students were killed by Islamist militants belonging to the Somalia-based al Shabab group.

The Archbishop also remembered the 22 Coptic Christians who were beheaded by Islamic State fighters in Libya in February.   In an Easter Sunday sermon at Canterbury Cathedral, the spiritual leader of the Anglican communion said the christian community must stand-up for persecuted christians around the world.

Netanyahu Speaks Out Against Iran Nuclear Deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke out in opposition to the nuclear deal struck between Iran and Western powers. In US television appearances Sunday, he expressed his fear that Iran will violate the agreement and build nuclear weapons, which Netanyahu claims would threaten Israel's existence and spark a potential arms race in the Middle East.
