Venezuela orders cuts in US embassy staff

Relations between the United States and Venezuela have reached another low, with Caracas ordering Washington to slash its diplomatic staff in the country.
As John Clarke reports from Washington, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is blaming America for his country's economic and political problems.

"Progress" central to Iran nuclear talks in Geneva

Diplomats are looking for progress in the Geneva talks, despite Iran saying it will not accept excessive and illogical demands over its nuclear programme.

Execution of Georgia woman postponed over "cloudy" drugs

The execution of a woman in the American state of Georgia has been postponed after officials said the drugs that were due to be used appeared "cloudy".


Kelly Gissendaner's execution had already been postponed once because of a snowstorm.

UK sexual abuse case involved hundreds of victims

Up to 370 girls may have been the victims of sexual abuse in Oxfordshire, according to a new report.

The serious case review comes after seven men were jailed in 2013 for abusing six girls in the city.

Jihadi John recording emerges in which he denies being an extremist


A audio recording has emerged of Mohammed Emwazi - the Islamic State member who'd become known as Jihadi John - denying being an extremist.

The recording was made by the advocacy group CAGE after Emwazi was deported from Tanzania in 2009 amid fears he was trying to travel to Somalia to receive terrorism training.

Emwazi, whose identity was made public last week, has appeared in a series of Islamic State beheading videos.

In the recording he  describes an interview  with a British intelligence agent who questions Emwazi about the 2005 London terror attacks known as 7/7 and the US terror attacks of 9/11.

Barclays reports big drop in profits

Barclays has reported a big drop in profits - as the banking group sets aside more money to cover investigations and compensation payouts…

Statutory pre-tax profits fell 21% to 2.26 billion pounds, around 3.47 billion dollars, for the year to 31 December 2014.

European politicians banned from attending funeral of Russian opposition politician

Several European politicians have been banned from attending the funeral of Boris Nemtsov, the Russian opposition politician murdered last week.

MOURNERS PAY RESPECTS TO NEMTSOV

Thousands of mourners have been queueing in Moscow to pay respects to murdered opposition politician Boris Nemtsov.

Several European politicians and opposition leader Alexei Navalny have been barred from attending Mr Nemtsov's funeral in the city.

He was murdered on Friday near the Kremlin.

Top level international officials meet in Brussels for Ebola conference

The leaders of the 3 worst hit countries of the Ebola crisis are in Brussels for an international conference to combat the disease.

A tape has emerged of Mohammed Emwazi - the Islamic State member who'd become known as Jihadi John - denying being an extremist.

It dates back to his deportation from Tanzania in 2009, when he was accused of trying to travel to Somalia for terrorism training.

In the tape, Mohammed Emwazi tells advocacy group CAGE of pressure from UK security service Mi5.

Emwazi has appeared in a series of Islamic State beheading videos and his identity was revealed last week.

In the tape he tells CAGE of trying to explain to Mi5 agents that he was anti-extremism.

IRAQI FORCES 'PROGRESS' IN TIKRIT OPERATION

Australia is boosting its troops in Iraq training local forces.

300 extra troops will be sent to the country in a joint mission with New Zealand.

There are now 900 Australian troops in the region.

It comes as Iraqi forces continue an operation to try and retake the city of Tikrit from the Islamic State.

Iraq's military says it has recaptured some districts around the city.

Texas Nurse Who Survived Ebola Sues Hospital

A  Texas nurse who contracted Ebola while treating a patient last fall claims the hospital where she worked has failed her. 

The 26 year old nurse has filed a lawsuit against the hospital’s parent company.

North Korea Fires 2 Test Missiles, Raising Regional Concerns

North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles off its eastern coast, according to South Korean officials.

The test firing appears to be in response to the start of annual joint military exercises by South Korea and the United States.

The missiles traveled about 305 miles or 490 kilometers before landing in waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan. 

Japan has now lodged a protest over the launches.

US Secretary of State blasts Human Rights Council over "obsession with Israel"
