Russia talks confrontation as Ukraine fighting worsens

"Nobody has ever talked to President Putin in the tone of an ultimatum, and could not do so even if they wanted to."


That's the message from the Kremlin as fighting in Ukraine worsens despite peace efforts lead by Germany and France.

Confusion in Alabama following gay marriage ruling

Some county courthouses in Alabama are refusing to follow the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to allow same-sex couples to marry.

The ruling is being seen as the clearest indication, America's highest court is preparing to remove all barriers to gay couples saying "I do."

Netflix launches service in Cuba

In a further sign of changing relations with the USA, the American online entertainment company Netflix has launched its service in Cuba.


The online streaming service will initially make its content available to the relatively small number of Cubans who can access international payment cards.

Obama: Iran needs to 'make a decision' but deal still possible

U.S. President Barack Obama has articulated "real differences" between himself and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Iran's nuclear ambitions.

He rejected the Israeli leader's push for tougher sanctions, asking "what's the rush?"- and would not rule out the possibility of a deal with Iran.

But he also said Iran had to make a decision.

First known anti-IS strike in Afghanistan reported

A former Taliban commander in Afghanistan who defected to the so-called Islamic State has been killed in a US airstrike, according to Afghan intelligence officials.

The US military hasn't confirmed the identities of those killed, but they are reported to include Mullah Abdul Rauf Khadim - who had been held by the Americans at Guantanamo Bay.

As Malcolm Brown reports, his switch in allegiance reflects the Islamic State's goal to establish itself in the region.

Harper Lee "extremely hurt" over novel claims

The novelist Harper Lee is said to be "extremely hurt" by claims that she's been pressured into authorizing the publication of a sequel to the iconic classic "To Kill A Mockingbird".


The 88 year-old author lives in seclusion at a retirement home in Alabama, and questions have been raised about whether she's aware that two million copies of the book are about the roll off the presses.

Greek shares plummet over euro exit fears

Bank shares in Greece have fallen sharply following remarks by Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis about the potential collapse of the eurozone.

Argentine Specialists casts doubt on Mexican investigation

An independent group of Argentinian forensic specialists, investigating the disappearance of the 43 student teachers from the Mexican town of Ayotzinapa, have released a report saying they've found numerous irregularities. 

The group said that 20 of the 134 DNA samples recovered from a dump, and sent by the Mexican government to a laboratory in Austria, didn't match those of the families of the missing students.

Teenager killer sends Snapchat selfie with body

A 16-year-old in the US state of Pennsylvania has been charged with
murder after he allegedly sent a photo of himself with his victim's
body using Snapchat.

Police say Maxwell Marion Morton used the photo-sharing social media

EU foreign ministers extend sanctions list over Ukraine crisis

Foreign Ministers from European Union countries are meeting in Brussels to discuss the ongoing fighting in Ukraine and a new wave of sanctions to pressure Russian officials Russian supporters in Ukraine to broker a lasting peace deal.

Ministers are due to announce 19 new names and 9 entities that will be added to the EU's sanctions list including Ukranian and Russian officials linked to the fighting in East Ukraine. 

Foreign affairs ministers will also discuss possible further sanctions against Russia ahead of a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.

UK Foreign Minister Philip Hammond says that while talks with Russia show progression, action needs to be taken.

UK Pledges more money to ebola-hit countries

The UK is pledging another 33 million pounds (50 million dollars) to help the three countries most affected by the ebola virus.


The money will be used to pay back debt that Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia owe to the International Monetary Fund.

Greece says other eurozone countries could be next to leave if they are forced out

Greek finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis (pron: ya-niss va-roo-fa-kiss) has said Italy and Portugal could leave the eurozone if Greece is forced out.

More soldiers and civilians killed in Ukraine fighting

At least nine Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 26 wounded in the latest fighting in the east of the country, says Ukraine's military.


Battles have been particularly intense around the town of Debaltseve northeast of the Russian backed militant controlled city of Donetsk.
