Convicted Man Featured in Podcast "Serial" Granted Appeal

A Maryland court has agreed to hear an appeal by a man whose murder conviction was investigated in a  podcast that became a cultural phenomenon.

Adnan Syed  (ODD-nahn SI-yed) is serving a life sentence for the murder of his former girlfriend. 

Rachel Silverman reports the case received renewed attention after it was featured in the podcast Serial, which became the first podcast to reach five million downloads.

Hollande, Merkel, Putin talks end without a word of agreement on Ukraine crisis

A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin says that talks in Moscow between President Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande were, 'constructive'.


But no word of agreement was reached in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, where fighting has escalated recently.

US wants to increase pressure on Russia if Ukraine deal not accepted

The Obama administration says it is working with its partners on ways to increase pressure on Russia if Moscow does not accept the peace proposals for Ukraine.

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have travelled to Russia to deliver Kiev's proposals which would return the status quo to the agreement reached last September.

US questions ISIS hostage claim

The Obama administration is questioning the claim made by the Islamic State organization, that an American held hostage was killed in a Jordanian airstrike.

The White House says it is deeply concerned by the reports that one-time aid worker Kayla Mueller when the building she was being held in collapsed.

At an event with academics in Washington, National Security Adviser Susan Rice said the U.S. is investigating the claims.

US State Department cannot confirm claims that American hostage was killed in Syria


The American government says it cannot confirm claims that a female American hostage has been killed in a coalition air strike in Syria.

The Islamic State group said on Friday that an American hostage had been killed by a Jordanian strike.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told journalists in Washington DC that it was not possible to confirm the Islamic State claim, but she said America was doing everything it could to free hostages in the region.

Al-Qaeda member sentenced to 25years

An Al Qaeda member has been sentenced in New York to 25 years in
prison in connection with the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in East
Africa.

Adel Abdel Bary was implicated for his supporting role in the embassy
attacks in Kenya and Tanzania. 224 died making it the deadliest
carried out by Al Qaeda prior to those on September 11th 2001.

US employers add 257,000 jobs in January

Dozens of bodies found in Mexico


Mexican police have found at least 61 bodies in an abandoned crematorium, near the city of Acapulco in Western Mexico. 

Authorities say that it is not yet clear whether the bodies found were victims of organised crime or if this was a case of negligence by the owners of the crematorium.

A UK court has ruled that British intelligence agency GCHQ unlawfully spied on UK citizens.


The Investigatory Powers Tribunal is a special court set up to ensure intelligence agencies in the UK were running correctly and found that GCHQ was in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.

US enhances ability to rescue aircrew bombing ISIS

The United States has taken steps to improve its ability to rescue any downed pilots flying bombing missions against the so-called Islamic State.

It was a demand of the United Arab Emirates following the capture by the extremist group of a Jordanian pilot, who was subsequently killed.

The UAE suspended its combat sorties and urged the US to position search and rescue teams closer to the action.
