US Travel Ban to Cuba May Be Lifted

The thaw in relations between the United States and Cuba has accelerated, with moves to end the travel ban on Americans visiting the Communist Caribbean nation.

Proof of life demand from Jordan

The government of Jordan says it must be given proof of life of one of its pilots before it continues with a hostage swap with Islamic State militants…

An ultimatum came in a recording reportedly of the Japanese hostage Kenji Goto.

In the recording, it says Jordanian pilot Moaz-al-Kasasbeh will be killed unless the country releases Iraqi prisoner Sajida al-Rishawi by 14.30 GMT on Thursday.

US scientist who claimed he could bomb New York jailed for 5 years

A disgruntled American nuclear scientist who promised to build 40 nuclear weapons for Venezuela and design a bomb targeted for New York City, has been jailed for five years.

In secret FBI recordings, Pedro Leonardo Mascheroni, tells an agent posing as a Venezuelan official that the bombs would prevent the US from invading the oil-rich nation.

Malaysia declares flight MH370's disappearance an accident and all passengers dead


Malaysian authorities have declared all 239 people on board the Malaysian Airline flight MH370 dead and the flight's disappearance an accident.

The flight, which was enroute to Beijing disappeared in March of last year.  Despite a massive international search of the souther Indian Ocean no wreckage has been found. 

Relatives of the victims have been angered by the ruling.  Many of the passengers were Chinese and the government in Beijing has called for Malaysia to pay compensation. 

Malaysian officials said the recovery of the missing aircraft was still a priority and all leads would be persued. 

The head of Malaysia's Civil Aviation Asharuddin Abdul Rahman made the announcement.

Alibaba earnings miss Wall St. Estimates

E-commerce giant Alibaba has posted its quarterly earnings in the
United States and revenue for the company missed Wall Street
estimates.

It's the second quarterly report Alibaba have posted since their
record $25 billion Initial Public Offering back in September.

Inquest opens in Sydney into deaths of two cafe siege victims





An inquest has opened in the deaths of two people killed when a gunmen took 18 people hostage at a cafe in the Australian city of Sydney in December. 

The court heard how the manager of the Lindt Chocolate cafe,  34 year old Tori Johnson was killed by gunman Man Haron Monis during the 16 hour siege.  His death prompted police to storm the cafe.   

The inquest heard 38 year old Katrina Dawson a lawyer, and mother of three young children was killed by police bullets. 

The inquest will ask if these deaths were avoidable.   

Jeremy Gormly, the lawyer assisting the state coroner gave details of how the two victims died.

US Supreme Court blocks three Oklahoma executions by lethal injection

The executions by lethal injection of three convicted killers in Oklahoma have been blocked by the Supreme Court, until more solid legal arguments are heard.

The ruling defines the particular sedative used in injections as ineffective and cruel- but allows the state's prison authorities to use a different drug.

US researchers warn North Korea may restart nuclear reactor


A US research institute is warning there are signs North Korea may be trying to restart its nuclear bomb fuel reactor.

The reactor has been shut down for five months, but the institute says satellite images show new activity on the plant.

Rare earthquake felt in the UK

Residents in the British Midlands felt the earth move overnight - as an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 was recorded.

Sydney siege inquest hears police bullets killed hostage

The start of an inquest into the Sydney cafe siege on December 15th has heard that one hostage was killed by police bullets. 

Another, cafe manager Tori Johnson, was killed by a bullet to the head from Man Haron Monis - who himself died in a shoot out with police.

IS militants release new hostage recording

Japan is investigating a new recording released by Islamic State militants - purporting to be hostage Kenji Goto.

The unverified recording says a Jordanian pilot being held hostage will be killed unless an Iraqi prisoner held by Jordan is freed by sunset on Thursday.

Jordan has offered to free convicted bomber Sajida al-Rishawi in exchange for the pilot.

Natasha Underhill, a terrorism expert at Nottingham Trent University, says this could set a dangerous precedent for talking to terrorists.

Spike in Online Threats Against Airlines

CNN is reporting a spike in online threats made against airlines in the last week and a half.

The network says the spike has come since January 17th, when  a bomb threat was made against a flight between Atlanta and Raleigh.

Thailand warns US about meddling

The charge d'affaires for the U.S embassy in Bangkok was called before Thai officials over comments made by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel.

Secretary Russel delivered what he described as a tough & blunt message to the Thai junta, but Thai officials say Washington does not understand their politics.

"Miracle Cat" survives apparent death in Florida

A cat in Florida that was presumed to have died in a road accident is now recovering after apparently clawing himself out of a grave.


Now known as "Bart the Miracle Cat", he was initially knocked down by a car in Tampa 5 days ago.
