Progress tops US Pres. Obama's political agenda

U.S. President Barack Obama is promoting how progress is needed to keep the U.S. economy growing.

He met with Congressional leaders ahead of his annual State of the Union Address (next week, Tuesday, January 20 at 9pm, Eastern Standard time).

LRA commander may head to ICC

Uganda has dropped demands that LRA commander Dominic Ongwen must be tried at home.

Instead the government says Ongwen will be tried at the International Criminal Court.

He's wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

New York chokehold complaints “largely rejected”

A report looking into recent New York police chokehold cases has found
that suggested punishment for those officers involved were largely
rejected.

This comes a month after a grand jury decision not to indict an
officer in the death of Eric Garner who died after being placed in a
chokehold by police.

Pres. Obama meets Congressional leaders

U.S. President Barack Obama is publicly urging cooperation with the Republican leadership of the U.S. Congress to keep the American economy growing.

His comments during a meeting with Congressional leaders come as the political divide in the American capital has been made clear following the 2014 mid-term elections, with the Republican party controlling both chambers.

Trial Begins For Alleged 'Silk Road' Creator

The trial of a U.S. man accused of running the underground criminal
marketplace Silk Road begins in New York City Tuesday. Ross Ulbricht
is accused of making millions by running a website that distributed
narcotics, forged documents, hacking and money laundering services to
more than 100,000 people worldwide.

Romney will "almost certainly" run for White House again

There is a future for Charlie Hebdo - editor

The editor-in-chief of Charlie Hebdo is promising the French satirical newspaper will continue publishing.

With a cover depicting the prophet Mohammed holding a sign saying I am Charlie, 3 million copies of the newspaper are rolling off the printing presses with versions in three languages.

Gerard Briard, the editor-in-chief, thanked everyone for their support and promised there will be more issues of Charlie Hebdo.

Funerals held for victims of Paris attacks

Simultaneous funerals are being held in Jerusalem and Paris to pay tribute to the victims of the deadly attacks in the French capital last week by armed jihadists.

A funeral in Jerusalem is taking place for the four Jewish people killed at a kosher supermarket in Paris are being buried. 

Meanwhile in Paris a solemn ceremony attended by French President Francois Hollande is remembering the 2 officers murdered by the gunmen who stormed the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo as well as a female officer shot in a separate attack.

The three were awarded special honors.

Charlie Hebdo to feature Prophet Mohammed on cover

French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo is printing its next edition featuring the prophet Mohammed on the cover, following last week's terror attacks by two gunmen who killed 12 employees.

The cover's headline also reads "All are forgiven".

South Sudan's factions pledge accelerated peace process

South Sudan's warring factions have pledged to accelerate the country's peace process after talks in Khartoum that were mediated by China.


The two sides have agreed to hasten attempts to form a transitional government in South Sudan, after a year of fighting that has killed tens of thousands of people.

Air Asia investigation continues via two black box recorders

Indonesian search and rescue officials say they are still determining how to recover the fuselage of an Air Asia Airbus 320 that crashed in the Java Sea last month with 162 people aboard.


They've now retrieved both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, which could yield valuable clues about why the plane crashed.


Indonesia's transport minister is Ignasius Jonan.

Next edition of Charlie Hebdo heads to printers

The next edition of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo is being prepared for publication on Wednesday, with a print-run of 3 million copies.

The magazine will hit news-stands just a week after the Paris attacks that left 17 people dead, including a dozen at its offices.

Meanwhile there are calls for European counties to work more closely together on counter-terrorism.

The head of the EU's law enforcement agency Europol, Rob Wainwright, says the sheer number of radicalized young men in Europe makes more terror attacks possible.

25 000 JOIN DRESDEN PEGIDA RALLY

25 000 people have joined an anti-Islamisation rally in Dresden in Germany, called following the attacks in Paris.

However, tens of thousands also joined anti-Pegida rallies across the country.

Pegida's anti-Islamisation rallies have been growing in size since the movement was founded in October last year.
