3-year anniversary of Colonel Gadaffi's death

This week marks the 3rd anniversary of the death of former Libyan dictator Colonel Gadaffi.

Since he was killed by rebel forces in 2011, Libya has struggled without an effective government and militias which are growing in power.

James Lindsay from the Council on Foreign Relations believes the failures of rebuilding Libya need to be considered elsewhere in the world.

Top Secret US Space Plane Lands After Orbiting for 674 Days

A top secret US Air Force spacecraft has made a successful landing after spending nearly two years orbiting the earth.

The X-37B is thought to be unmanned and looks like a  mini version of the NASA space shuttle.

WH: 'Ebola czar' will coordinate all govt agencies over virus

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says Ron Klain is the right choice to take charge of the government's response to the Ebola crisis.

The island of Bermuda is bracing itself for possible damage caused by Hurricane Gonzalo which was bearing down on the island on Friday afternoon.

Islamic State extremist 'training pilots to fly captured warplanes'


Islamic State militants are reportedly training new pilots in Syria to fly in 3 captured fighter jets.

A group monitoring the conflict said it had heard from witnesses who saw the planes being flown near a military airport in Aleppo.

The news comes as Iraqi forces have launched an offensive against IS near the town of Tikrit.

US VP's son reportedly kicked out of navy over drugs

It's emerged that the son of American vice president Joe Biden was kicked out of the US navy earlier this year. 

Press reports say he was discharged as a public affairs officer after testing positive for cocaine.

Hunter Biden himself has expressed regret and embarrassment, without going into the details.

Pistorius will know his fate in 4 days

INTRO:  Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius will know in 4 days whether he will go to jail or receive a suspended sentence for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February last year. The judge in the case will hand down sentencing next week Tuesday, after the trial concluded with closing arguments from the Defence and the State today. Men charged in UK over terror plot


Four men have been charged in the UK with the intention to carry out acts of terrorism. A fifth with firearms offences.


The charges follow arrests which took place in London over the past two weeks and come as British police say they have seen an increase in activity relating to the Islamic State.

Obama weighs up 'Ebola czar'; first nurse to contract Ebola transferred

The first nurse to test positive for Ebola in the US arrived in Maryland Thursday night from Dallas, to be treated at the nation's leading research hospital.

Nina Pham, who treated Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan at the Health Presbyterian Hospital said she was doing well.

Meanwhile pressure is mounting on the US administration to impose travel bans on passengers arriving from West Africa.

Screening for Ebola at UK airports extended


Screening of passengers to check for the Ebola virus is being rolled out further at UK airports. 


Staff will carry out checks at Manchester and Birmingham airports after they begin at London Gatwick airport and at the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras station next week.

State asks for 10 years prison sentence for Pistorius

INTRO:  Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius will know on Tuesday whether he will go to prison for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was earlier found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter). Arguments in mitigation and aggravation of sentence were completed in the High Court in Pretoria today. 

The athlete's defence has pleaded with the judge that Pistorius be sentenced to house arrest and community service, as he would not be safe in prison.

But state prosecutor Gerrie Nel was adamant that society and the family wanted Pistorius to go to prison for a long time ...

In his closing statements, Nel also questioned Pistorius's claim that his disability was a reason for not being able to go to prison, while his whole career was built on competing against able-bodied athletes.

Putin and Poroshenko meet in Milan

Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Milan to discuss the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine.

A number of EU leaders will also attend the meeting - they accuse Moscow of arming rebel fighters and deploying Russian military forces in Ukraine - a claim Russia denies.

WESTMINSTER DEBATES UK - EU REFERENDUM

Another attempt at legislating for a UK referendum on EU membership is being made at the House of Commons.

Backbench Conservative MP Bob Neill has tabled a bill to enshrine into law a commitment to a European Union vote after next May's election.

Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron has promised a referendum if he wins a majority in May, but the other main parties oppose this.

A previous attempt at legislating for a vote didn't get past the House of Lords.

But Bob Neill thinks it's worth another try.

UN URGES GREATER GLOBAL EFFORT VS EBOLA

The United Nations says a $1bn trust fund it launched in September to fight Ebola has received just $100 000 so far.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says the world must step up its efforts against the outbreak.

It has killed around 4500 people so far, mostly in west Africa.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan says he is 'bitterly disappointed' with the international response.

UK POLICE 'STRETCHED' BY TERROR THREATS

British police say they are 'stretched' by the amount of inquiries they have ongoing into Islamist-related extremism.

The rare admission from the Metropolitan Police's anti-terror chief Mark Rowley also contains a warning the threat will last for 'years'.

He says counter-terrorism policing has had to adapt quickly to conflicts in Syria and elsewhere in the region drawing in fighters from the UK.

Foreign Minister: NZ on Security Council Is 'Victory' for Small Nations

New Zealand, Spain, Venezuela, Angola and Malaysia are the newest
additions to the United Nations Security Council. Voted in by 193
member states, they will join the 15-nation Security Council- seen as
the most powerful arm of the United Nations.

The win is a large victory for a small nation like New Zealand, but
Foreign Minister Murray McCully says he is confident the country is up
to the challenge.

US to push cooperation Islamic militants at Indonesia Inauguration
