Kenya's President Kenyatta has appeared before ICC

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has appeared before judges at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, where he's charged with crimes against humanity relating to ethnic violence that erupted in Kenya after the December 2007 elections.

Mr Kenyatta did not make a statement to the court, instead choosing to speak through his council. They argued that the case should be thrown out because of a lack of evidence from the prosecution team.

The prosecution agreed that they had insufficient evidence to take the case to trial, but blamed that on omissions in the evidence and a lack of cooperation from the Kenyan government. Arguing that despite not having enough evidence, it would be detrimental to justice if Mr Kenyatta were not tried.

Our Correspondent at the ICC in The Hague, Sandra Gathmann says there has been a huge presence at the court for Mr Kenyatta's hearing
