US-Russia conclude opening talks on Ukraine war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says historic peace talks with his Russian counterpart are the "first step in a long but difficult journey" to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In an hours-long meeting behind closed doors in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, America's top diplomat appeared to offer an olive branch to Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is still sanctioned by the United States for his role in the invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

The two men vowed to create conditions to restore in-full co-operation between their nations, including restoring ambassadors to each other's countries — and a possible summit between President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
