ISRAEL-HAMAS REACH CEASEFIRE

Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza.

It follows repeated efforts, mediated by Qatar, to strike a truce and pause the fighting for the first time since November 2023.

The agreement would allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return home, and see dozens of hostages freed after being kidnapped in the October 7th attacks, when Hamas launched a deadly assault on Israel, triggering a massive Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip that has lasted since.

Tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict.

The ceasefire marks a major foreign policy win for US President Joe Biden, in the closing days of his term.

But incoming President Donald Trump, who re-takes the White House next week, claims the deal could have only happened as a result of his recent election victory, with his inauguration creating a de-facto deadline for talks.
