New York City will examine its historical role in the slave trade and could offer controversial reparations as a result.
Legislation passed by the city council this week approved a new study into the legacy of slavery and racial injustice.
Eight lawmakers voted against the bill - with one calling the idea of taxpayers funding reparations "insulting".
