US lawmakers set to pass bill to avoid gvt shutdown

Lawmakers in the United States Congress are close to passing a bill that would avert an imminent partial government shutdown.

The breakthrough came late on Wednesday night, when the House of Representatives — the lower chamber — voted to approve a $467bn spending package.

The bill now goes to the Senate, the upper chamber, where leaders have vowed to back the measure "with time to spare."
