Lawmakers in the United States are racing against the clock to avert a partial government shutdown, with just a day left until funding runs dry.
Both chambers of Congress — the House of Representatives and the Senate — must pass a short-term extension by the end of Friday, but recent history shows that consensus can be hard to come by on Capitol Hill.
