US Congress passes bill to avert catastrophic debt default

The United States Congress has passed a bill paving the way for the suspension of the nation's debt ceiling, a move that prevents a catastrophic default on its $31.4 trillion worth of debt next week.

The Fiscal Responsibility Act  — struck by President Joe Biden and House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy — was passed by Senators late on Thursday night, amid stiff opposition from both sides of the political aisle.

From Washington DC, Benji Hyer reports.
