US government lays out new asylum rules amid migrant surge at southern borde

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, is warning of "difficult" days ahead, as a pandemic-era policy — used to expel migrants millions of times from the country's southern border — comes to an end.


Title 42 will expire on Thursday, although it's being replaced with a series of measures that the administration hopes will build legal pathways for asylum and fix what it calls a "broken immigration system."
