An armed ground incursion from Ukraine into Russia has been fully repelled according to Russia's Ministry of Defence.
The self-styled "Freedom of Russia Legion" took responsibility for the rare example of land warfare on Russian territory. It describes itself as a group of Russians and Belorussians fighting to end President Vladimir Putin's "dictatorship".
Though they entered from Ukrainian territory, Kyiv says it did not orchestrate the incursion, calling it 'partisan action' by those 'fed up with the actions of their country's terrorist regime'.
The Minister of Defence declined to say if Ukraine had provided support.
Stuart Smith reports from Moscow.
