British high street retailer WH Smith bounced back from a pandemic slump to more than double its profits over the past year. The stationery and books chain with hundreds of stores at airports and train stations will open more than 120 new branches worldwide over the next year, including 50 across North America. Meanwhile WH Smith's British business benefitted from the end of Covid restrictions. Pre-tax profits in the past six months rose above estimates from $22 million to $56 million. Adam Solomons reports from London.
