EU ID check-free movement zone to expand for first time in decade

The European Union's ID-check-free travel zone is set to expand for the first time in a decade. The so-called Schengen Area is the largest free movement zone in the world, comprising 26 countries with more than a million cross-border commuters.

EU ministers green-lit Croatia's bid to join Schengen on Thursday, but two other Schengen hopefuls, Romania and Bulgaria, were barred from entry.

EU member Austria had suggested it would veto their accession to the free movement area amid concerns about a rise in irregular migrant arrivals. Ylva Johansson [pronunciation: Eelva Yohanson] is the EU's Home Affairs Commissioner.
