The chief executive of P&O Ferries acknowledged the firm failed to consult with trade unions before firing 800 staff without notice last week.
Giving evidence to MPs on Thursday, CEO Peter Hebblethwaite refused to be drawn on whether the ferry operator broke the law.
But Prime Minister Boris Johnson has accused P&O of breaching UK labour laws, and said the company could face fines or possible prosecution.
