A diplomatic row has broken out over a newly forged defence deal between the US, UK and Australia.
France has accused Australia of a 'betrayal', because the alliance means a multi-billion deal between Paris and Canberra to provide subs has been scrapped.
The European Union says it was not consulted about the plans, which came the day before the bloc announced its new Indo-Pacific strategy.
