Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth, dead at 99


Buckingham Palace has announced that the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, has died.

He was 99, and had been the Queen's constant companion for the last 73 years.  

In March he spent a month in hospital being treated for a heart ailment, before returning to Windsor Castle. .

Prince Philip didn't hesitate to speak his mind on the great affairs of state.

In February 1967, as Britain faced an economic downturn, he called on the country to rally round.

Prince Philip spoke often about the threats being faced by the environment.

Among the many charities and organizations he headed, he will perhaps best be remembered for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme.

Prince Philip was a tireless advocate for a variety of causes, and championed the work of designers for more than 50 years.

The Prince Philip Designers Prize celebrates ways in which designers can improve daily life, and was one of his most treasured activities.
