UK UNEMPLOYMENT JUMPS 50 000

UK unemployment jumped 50 000 to 1.35 million in the three months to March.

The period only includes one week of Britain's full lockdown - so is expected to rise much further in the next quarter's figures.

Separate figures show the number of people claiming unemployment benefit soared by 856 500 to over 2 million in April as coronavirus restrictions continued.

Business reporter Declan Curry says the statistics give a sense of what is to come.
