Hike in the price of onions leading to thefts across India

The price of onions – a staple ingredient in Indian kitchens -- has increased to just over $2 per kilogram.

Less than three weeks ago, they were retailing at under 30 cents.

Untimely and prolonged rainfall has damaged crop this year leading to a severe shortage of onions concerns about further food inflation.

As Sreoshi Mukherjee reports, with prices going up, many instances of incidents of onion theft have come to light.
